Ewa Young, is a resident in dermatology and venereology with special interest in occupational and environmental dermatology.
The research focus of Ewa Young is contact allergy to p-phenylenediamine (PPD). PPD is a common substance used in permanent hair dyes for more than 100 years, despite its strong contact sensitizing capacity. Young´s research focuses on exploring how the molecule is changing in the hair coloring process, mainly by oxidation, and to study which oxidation products are responsible for the allergic reactions to PPD in contact allergic patients. The reactions to PPD are also studied in patients over time. Contact allergy may be a problem both for people who get their hair dyed and also as occupational disease in hair dressers that are at risk to get hand eczema. A part of the PhD project deals with the protection with gloves against hair dyes and PPD.
