Fredrik Ekengren

PhD, Senior lecturer

Personal profile

Research

I completed my undergraduate and advanced studies at Mid Sweden University in Östersund and at Lund University. I was awarded my PhD in Archaeology at Lund University in 2009, with a doctoral dissertation entitled Ritualization, Hybridization, Fragmentation. The Mutability of Roman Vessels in Germania Magna AD 1–400.

My research centers on the Iron Age and Viking Age in Europe and Scandinavia, with a particular focus on graves and mortuary practices, as well as cross-cultural interaction. My broader interest in cultural contacts in past societies has also informed research on the interactions between Indigenous populations and European colonists in 17th-century North America. Additionally, I conduct research on digital methods in archaeological research and teaching, as well as how archaeology and archaeologists are portrayed in popular culture, particularly in science fiction.

Focus areas:

  • Burial archaeology; the archaeology of ritual and religion; ritual theory
  • Iron Age and Viking Age Europe and Scandinavia
  • Roman influences in European Barbaricum
  • Roman imports in Northern Europe and Scandinavia
  • Boat graves from the Vendel Period
  • Cultural interactions; colonial entanglements; post-colonial theory
  • The 17th century colony New Sweden in North America
  • Digital heritage; 3D collections; digitisation of archaeological data; collaborative digital platforms; typological metadata
  • Archaeology in popular culture

In addition, I served as Editor-in-Chief of Lund University’s archaeological publication series during the period 2017–2023.

Over the years, I have also held several positions of trust within the university and in professional organizations.
