Personal profile

Research

I am an Associate Senior Lecturer at the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics (IIIEE) at Lund University. My research focuses on the governance of sustainability transitions in the built environment and energy systems, particularly how institutional arrangements, business models, and policy frameworks shape the pace, equity, and material sustainability of large-scale transformations.

A central part of my research examines how energy renovation can be coordinated and delivered at scale. Beginning with my doctoral work at Linnaeus University and continuing through subsequent research projects, I developed some of the first systematic analyses of One-Stop Shop (OSS) models in Sweden and Europe. Rather than viewing OSS simply as a service innovation, my work examines them as governance arrangements that coordinate actors, distribute risks and responsibilities, and shape decision-making across fragmented renovation markets. This research contributed directly to the establishment of Klimatfastigheter Småland AB, the first OSS initiative of its kind in Sweden.

Alongside energy efficiency, I increasingly work on sufficiency in the built environment. Here, I am interested in how governance frameworks, design choices, and institutional incentives can move beyond improving technical performance alone and also address absolute energy and resource demand. This includes examining how sufficiency, circularity, and adaptability interact across the building lifecycle, and what their alignment means for long-term sustainability and resilience.

These research strands are grounded in sustained collaborative work through European and Swedish research projects. Through EU Horizon 2020 projects such as INNOVATE and ProRetro, as well as Stronghouse under Interreg North Sea Region, I have worked with municipalities, housing organisations, construction firms, researchers, and citizens on renovation services, financing models, and strategies for accelerating sustainable renovation. My approach combines perspectives from social science, economics, innovation studies, and engineering to understand how governance structures influence technological uptake and system performance.

Extending this perspective beyond buildings, my research also examines the governance of energy infrastructure. I have developed the concept of Circular Grid Governance (CGG), which brings circular economy principles, lifecycle thinking, and energy justice into the analysis of smart energy systems. This work shifts attention beyond digital and operational optimisation to questions of material flows, infrastructure lifetimes, obsolescence, and how costs and benefits are distributed over time.

A related line of research explores the societal integration of emerging energy technologies. This includes photovoltaic systems and hybrid urban configurations combining PV with Small Modular Reactors, with a focus on the institutional, regulatory, financial, market, and societal conditions that shape their development and adoption.

Alongside my research and teaching, I contribute to several professional and interdisciplinary networks related to the built environment, sustainability transitions, and the circular economy. I am a member of the Nordic Smart Building Initiative’s Smart Building Lifecycle & Resilience to the Future group, the ShiftSweden Experts’ Pool, and the Circular Economy Research Collective (CERC) Nordics. I also serve as AI Coordinator at IIIEE.

Beyond academia, I have been actively engaged for more than 17 years, with a pause in 2020, as a volunteer with Engineers Without Borders, contributing to infrastructure development and community well-being projects across several continents.
