Work-in-progress thesis title: On the conceptual and functional structuring of the degree modifiers quite, rather, pretty, and fairly in British English
The expression of DEGREE is a common, yet often an elusive notion in communication, which is why it can be a challenging target for operationalisation. For this reason, a usage-based theoretical framework (e.g., Langacker 1987, 1991, 1999, 2008) is adopted in the present study in line with, e.g., Paradis (e.g., 1997, 2001, 2008). The overall aim is to describe the patterns in which quite, rather, pretty, and fairly are embedded, and in so doing, shed light on how conceptual content interacts with function. More specifically, to what extent can this interaction be used to delineate the wide functional range of quite? For data, samples from the spoken and written components of the British National Corpus are retrieved. For the understanding of the usage patterning, explorative quantitative techniques, such as correspondence analysis, are employed (cf. Glynn and Fischer 2010; Glynn and Robinson 2014).
