Personal profile

Research

I received my MD in 1981 in Barcelona, Spain and my PhD at Lund University in 1991. Since 2006 I am associate professor in Neurology at Lund University.

I have been a consultant for many years, since 2014 I am then Head of Rehabilitation Medicine at the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation medicine at Skåne University Hospital. I am the Chairman of the Region Skåne Expert Group for Stroke and board member of the Swedish Stroketeam Council.
My current research is mainly clinically based.  Besides epidemiological studies of stroke and multiple sclerosis, I am involved in several studies that concern the exploration, development and evaluation of complex interventions aimed at helping patients to achieve and maintain the best possible function, level of activity and participation after stroke.
I am the principal investigator of the research projects NASTRU, the Nature Stroke Study, (RCT on nature based rehabilitation for post stroke fatigue) and the recently started Development and Evaluation of a Specific Structured Follow-up during the First Year after Stroke.

I am the main supervisor of PhD student Lucia Alonso Magdalena who studies the prevalence and incidence of Multiple Sclerosis in the town of Malmö in the South of Sweden. I am assistant supervisor of Håkan Carlsson whose PhD project explores reduced sensation in the upper extremity and specific sensory training after stroke.

I am currently collaborating in a research project that explores the physical and social environmental aspects of the home setting for stroke rehabilitation after early discharge (REARCH); in another project studying the conditions for return to work after stroke (RTW) and in studies of the long term prognosis after mild brain injury.

I collaborate with several research groups within Lund University and other Swedish universities.
Since 2017 I am affiliated with the research group Stroke Policy and Quality Registry Research, Neurology, Department of Clinical Sciences Lund, Lund University.
