Research

My research is within the field of Atomic Astrophysics, which includes atomic structure and spectroscopy of free atoms for application to stellar spectroscopy. This covers laboratory measurements and quantum mechanical calculations of atomic properties for astrophysical spectroscopy, and also high-resolution spectroscopy of stars.

Interesting parameters are energy level structure, radiative lifetimes and transition rates and intrinsic line structurs such as hyperfine structure. Presently we are focusing on near-infrared spectroscopy in the region 1-5 μm, matching the observatories working in this region (e.g VLT/CRIRES) and the upcoming E-ELT. Other interests include metastable lifetimes measurements important for emission line nebulae and stellar winds, where we apply these to the stellar ejecta around the massive star Eta Carinae.
