Research

My research interests revolve mainly around different integration problems in the climate, environmental and sustainability sciences. One such problem is the integration of science in society more broadly. How can and should we use science in policymaking and planning in democratic societies? How can we manage the values in science in a way that both protects the integrity of science and the democratic legitimacy of the institutions that rely on scientific knowledge.

The other overarching integration problem is more internal to the sciences, although it is connected to the former in many ways. Social problems and grand challenges such as managing environmental harms, curtailing climate change and managing its consequences, and transitioning socieities towards sustainability are typically thought to be problems that are not possible to deal with within specific disciplines. They require at least interdisciplinary approaches to be appropriately managed. Yet interdisciplinarity is often very challenging and seems to at least sometimes undermine or at least make more difficult to make progress (or assess what making progress even means). The problems that arise here have to do with how to deal with the challenges that arises out of interdisciplianry research and how integration between different disciplines can and should be pursued.
