I am a doctoral candidate in the research school ASSURE – Adaptation of urban Space through Sustainable Regeneration, which focuses on the sustainable transition of the existing building stock. My research examines how existing buildings can be converted to new uses with minimal interventions in ventilation systems and other technical installations.

I work with national energy performance certificates, building regulations, and real conversion projects to analyse how different conversion strategies affect airflow, ventilation principles, energy performance, and indoor environmental quality, and under what conditions existing systems can be retained or reused rather than replaced. My projects also include method development for early design stages, where building programmes, layouts and existing building services are linked to life-cycle assessments and cost analyses to demonstrate the climate and resource benefits of different conversion options.

The overall aim of my research is to reduce uncertainty in decisions about the conversion of existing buildings and to support a more circular, energy-efficient and cost-effective transformation of the building stock, while maintaining or improving indoor environmental quality.
