My research is mainly about children and adolescents with chronic illness and their families and with special interest in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes. I am also interested in issues concerning the quality of the services provided; how healthcare services are organised and the consequences for the individual child and family. Besides the efficacy of services, another quality perspective in terms of consequences of healthcare includes issues such as availability, communication and participation. With my long background as a paediatric diabetes nurse, an obvious emphasis is on implementation, that child, family and society actually will benefit from the new knowledge generated from the research.
Through my background of many years of clinical work, I have an extensive network with healthcare professionals working in the field of paediatric diabetes both national and international. One example is a Nordic network group in the field of diabetes nursing research, another example of network is through FEND (Foundation of European Nurses in Diabetes) including researchers in the field of diabetes care in Europe. I am also part of a national network including 60 nurses performing research with children. Our research group has since several years back collaboration with researchers at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia where I am involved in a research project with adolescents with HIV.
My research of the initial management when a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes has had a significant impact on the care, not only locally but also nationally. The research showed that a home-based model of care were safe, feasible, effective and cost-effective as compared to the traditional hospital-based care. After implementation of new routines in clinical practice, I continue to evaluate the long-term effect in uncontrolled settings.
Together with colleagues I developed, planned and carried out a commissioned postgraduate programme in diabetes care during 2013-2014 in two cities parallel (Abu Dhabi and Al Ain) in United Arab Emirates. Since 2015 I teach, supervise and examine both at Bachelor’s level and at Master’s level at the Department of Health Sciences, Lund University. Together with a colleague I was the course leader 2015-2016 for a postgraduate course of complex intervention in paediatric healthcare.
I am a paediatric nurse and further specialized in diabetes. I have worked as a paediatric nurse since 1989 and as a paediatric diabetes nurse since 2001. In 2012 I defended my thesis about the initial management when a child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Since 2013 I work as an assistant lecturer parallel with clinical work and research.
