My research on models of care at the onset of type 1 diabetes has had a substantial and sustained impact on paediatric diabetes care, both regionally and nationally. Through randomized controlled trials and health economic evaluations, we demonstrated that a hospital-based home care model at diagnosis is safe, feasible, clinically effective, and cost-effective compared to traditional inpatient care.

The findings informed changes in clinical routines, and the model has been implemented in practice. Importantly, we have continued to evaluate outcomes in real-world clinical settings, demonstrating long-term sustainability beyond controlled research conditions.

Building on this translational research trajectory, we are currently initiating a new programme focusing on adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes in Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to develop contextually adapted and implementable interventions in low-resource settings.

Through my longstanding clinical background and academic career, I have established extensive national and international collaborations with healthcare professionals, researchers, and clinical leaders within paediatric diabetes and child health. My research is closely integrated with clinical practice, and I work in active partnership with healthcare services to ensure relevance, feasibility, and implementation of research findings.

In recent years, my collaborative work has expanded to include other chronic conditions in childhood, involving interdisciplinary teams across medicine, nursing, and allied health professions. I also engage in international partnerships, including projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, aiming to strengthen contextually adapted healthcare interventions for adolescents with chronic illness.

Education and academic leadership constitute a central part of my professional engagement. Since 2019, I serve as Chair of the Programme Committee for Nursing, Radiography, and Reproductive, Perinatal and Sexual Health at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University. This role involves strategic responsibility for educational quality, programme development, and long-term planning across multiple professional programmes.

Prior to this, I was Programme Director for the Specialist Nursing Programme, encompassing ten different specialisations, with responsibility for coordination, development, and quality assurance at advanced level.

I have extensive experience in teaching, supervision, and examination at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, as well as postgraduate education. Together with colleagues, I developed and implemented an international commissioned postgraduate programme in diabetes education and clinical care in the United Arab Emirates. I have also co-developed and led a doctoral-level course on complex interventions in paediatric healthcare, delivered both in Sweden and Ethiopia.

My educational work is characterised by a close integration of research, clinical expertise, and leadership in programme development, with a focus on strengthening evidence-based and sustainable healthcare education.

I am a registered paediatric nurse with specialist training in diabetes care and more than three decades of clinical experience in paediatric healthcare. Since 2001, I have worked as a paediatric diabetes specialist nurse, combining clinical practice with research and development of care models.

I defended my doctoral thesis in 2012 on the initial management of children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Since 2013, I have combined academic work with clinical engagement, contributing to teaching, research, and leadership within paediatric nursing.

I was appointed Associate Professor in Paediatric Nursing in 2021 and currently serve as Senior Lecturer at Lund University. Since autumn 2025, I also serve as Head of Research Group, with responsibility for research strategy, supervision, and development of the group’s scientific profile. My professional work is characterised by the integration of clinical expertise, research, education, and academic leadership.
