Isabella Silva Barreto joined the Biomechanics group at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Lund University, in January 2018 when she started her master thesis project on nanoscale characterization of the mineralization process in developing long bones. After her graduation in September 2018, she continued working with the project in the group as a Project Assistant and in March 2019 she started as a PhD student.
Her research is focused on characterizing musculoskeletal tissue composition and structure at multiple length scales, primarily micro- and nanoscale, using synchrotron-based X-ray techniques. She is currently evaluating the impact of mechanical loading at these length scales, through investigating the effect of impaired/lack of muscle-induced loading on the mineralization of long bones during embryonic development, as well as the effect of different loading levels on the normal function and repair process of the Achilles tendon.
