Ongoing research
Svensson's research focuses on issues regarding sustainable energy and primarily in electric power systems. Energy and electrical systems are in a transition phase where electricity consumption is expected to increase to achieve the climate targets. For minimal emissions, new technologies need to be developed for the electrification of sectors such as transport and industry. Extended use of electricity, together with the decommissioning of existing power generation rise major challenges in the electricity supply, not least for how the expansion of renewable must be done over time.
   Wind and solar power along with bioenergy are expected to meet most of the future energy supply. Large scale wind energy is an important part of the future energy mix, depending on the time aspect and goal targets. Several research needs are different ancillary services from renewable resources, which wind power can contribute to a number linked to system integration. Several ancillary services in both power supply and electricity use will automatically be coordinated to manage future power balance.
  Renewable electricity generation at distribution level also opens up research areas of in local energy systems where autonomous systems may play a major role in the future. Important research here is flexibility and scalability linked to automation and enhanced communications for possible aggregation and distribution of various functions and services.
