Personal profile

Research

I am an economic historian of the later medieval and early-modern period. At present I am particularly interested in the emergence of old age pensions, a topic that follows quite nicely my prior research into the development of financial markets and the household economy in late-medieval Holland. How people dealt with old age, and to what degree nascent financial institutions allowed them to prepare for old age, are still very much understudied subjects. My work on pre-industrial retirement homes shows which people turned to the market for a care-free old age, and how the pension funds of the day were being managed. In addition to this I work on personal saving strategies – the use of piggy banks! – and mortgage markets.

Teaching

At Lund University's Department of Economic History I teach three Global Economic History courses and a course on doing primary research.

I am the program director of the BSc Economy & Society program.
