Personal profile

Research

Since 2012 I am Professor in Rehabilitation medicine and head of the Rehabilitation Medicine Research Group. I graduated with an MD 1984 and defended my thesis at Umeå University in 1985. I have been Senior consultant at Skåne University Hospital in Lund since 1997 and I am today Medical director of the Neurological rehabilitation team.

A large portion of my research is based on our clinical work and includes people with stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, post-polio syndrome, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and neuromuscular diseases. We study the consequences of a neurologic disability in a life-long perspective and develop rehabilitation interventions to assist these people to achieve the highest possible level of functioning. One of our research areas is Para sports medicine and the epidemiology of injuries and illnesses. This area also includes studies of the impact of physical activity and organized sports on activity, participation and life satisfaction in people with neurologic disabilities. I am main supervisor of five PhD students and assistant supervisor of one PhD student.

I am Standing member of the Medical committee of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and former Chief Medical Officer of the Swedish Paralympic Committee, and since 2014. I am member of the Therapeutics Use Exemption Committee of the Anti-doping Committee in Anti-Doping Sweden. I am the Para Sport & Paralympic Sport Editor in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, official scholarly publication of the Association of Academic Physiatrists (AAP).
