Personal profile

Research

I am currently working as a Senior Consultant in Gastroenterology/Hepatology and Internal Medicine at Skåne University Hospital. I have completed a full-time preclinical/laboratory PhD in the field of immunology and defended my thesis in December 2004. My research focus was back then the function of homing molecules on lymphocytes in relation to the gastrointestinal immune system, working in murine models. I also worked 14 months as a Visiting Research Fellow in Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA. Subsequently I focused on becoming a clinician, and eventually I began to combine translational research and clinical work in the field of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). I have thus moved from murine models to human tissues obtained from patients with IBD or colorectal cancer, and healthy controls. I function as a Senior Consultant at a tertiary referral IBD-center (Skåne University Hospital). As an Associate Professor, I manage and sponsor a research group comprised of four PhD-students, one research nurse, and one post-doc. I am involved in a number of collaborative initiatives, including regional, national, and international collaborations.

The main lines of research for my group are: A) Exploring the pathobiology and immunology of IBD, as well as the pathways leading to mucosal healing during treatment, and B) exploring tools for optimizing the clinical management of IBD, including therapeutic strategies, managing IBD in conjunction with pregnancy, monitoring disease activity through various modalities including biomarkers, endoscopy, ultrasound, radiology, and telemedicine. We also have projects dealing with prediction of therapy responses to approved agents, potential novel therapeutic targets, and the gut microbiome. In addition, I am involved in C) Research projects regarding systemic inflammatory diseases and the role of the gut in rheumatological diseases; and I have an interest in D) Exploring the management of immunological side-effects from Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor (ICPI) cancer therapeutics as well as the neoplastic microenvironment.
