Personal profile

Research

I am Associate Professor in Cognitive Science and Senior Researcher in Linnaeus environment ”Cognition, Communication, and Learning” at Lund University. In my research, I have combined quantitative and qualitative methods (eye tracking, verbal protocols, experiments, focus groups, interviews) to study cognition and communication.

My research focuses on multimodality, cognition and visual communication. I have been using eye movement measurement to study in detail image perception, the interplay between language and images, the role of images for learning, visual thinking (mental imagery), and users' interaction with various media. My research has practical implications for how we design accessible and readable texts in various media. Currently, I am investigating accessibility of visual information via the process of audio description (verbal descriptions of visual scenes for people with visual impairment and blindness).

My book "Discourse, vision and cognition" (Benjamins 2008) concerns perception, interpretation and description of images and the underlying cognitive processes. My book "Myths and facts about reading" (Nordstedts 2010) presents research on reading and on the interplay between text, images and graphics in various media. It has implications for a user-friendly, accessible design of complex texts - image messages in print and on-line. My book "Methodologies for multimodal research" (Sage 2012) is focusing on novel methods and tools for the analysis of visual communication and multimodality, including an interdisciplinary framework and a triangulation of methods.

I am also one of the editors of the antology "Audio description - research and practices" (2016) published in co-operation between Lund university, Stockholm university and the Swedish Agency for Accessible Media (MTM). The book is the first of its kind in Sweden and Scandinavia and is available as a printed book, as an open access publication, as a talking book and in Braille. My recent book is about guidelines, research and practices of image description (Bildbeskrivning för tillgänglighet, 2019).

I am Coordinator of the ADACOM initiative "Audio description and image description for accessible communication and social inclusion" and Chair of the Swedish Braille Authority (Punktskriftsnämnden), Swedish Agency for Accessible Media.
