Jenny Carey

Doctoral student researching the bog body phenomenon and human/bog relations, at the intersections of archaeology, environmental humanities, critical plant studies and more-than-humanism.

My research explores the creation and perpetuation of the central narratives in bog body research, and the creation and portrayal of these bodies as a specific phenomenon. It explores shifting perceptions of the bog and human-bog relations through time, and aims to critique and challenge the centring of the human and the human body in this phenomenon, through a 'more-than-human' led approach.

Influenced by the environmental humanities, critical plant studies and feminist political ecology, I am interested in exploring human/bog relations and moving towards an inherently interdisciplinary research area that my work calls critical peat/bog studies.

This kind of thinking-with peat and moss aims to engage with the possibilities of an anthropo(de)centric and distinctly more-than-human bog body research and to explore what this could look like in practice within a commonly anthropocentric discipline, while trying to embrace the ambiguity, multivocality and multivalence this requires.

Other interests: forensics, bryology, critical plant studies, vegetal ontologies, ethnobotany, ethics, archaeological and critical theory, wetlands, peats and bogs.
