Joel W. Abdelmoez is a PhD candidate in comparative politics in the Middle East, currently working on a project about feminist activism, constructions of history, and transnationalism in Egypt and Tunisia. He has also previously studied and published on gender politics in Saudi Arabia, LGBTQ+ organizations in the Arab world, military masculinity in Egyptian media, and on the history of popular, nationalist "operettas" in Egypt. Joel is a former adjunct and director of studies for Middle Eastern studies at Stockholm University. He has a BA and MA in Middle Eastern studies from Stockholm University and an MPhil in multidisciplinary gender studies from the University of Cambridge.

Joel's research deals broadly with contentious politics and feminist activism in the contemporary Middle East. Combining feminist political theory and social movement theory with performance studies, Joel is particularly interested in contemporary feminists' constructions of history, the temporality of transnational feminism, as well as what using a performance studies perspective might tell us about transnational feminist politics. His research also deals more generally with the intersection of gender politics and media, both in terms of news media, social media, and popular culture, and the use of digital tools for feminist activism.
