Research

The research has a focus on integrative physiology, mainly focused on physiological responses to hypoxia and physical activity, in order to contribute to the understanding of how the body is able to cope with various forms of oxygen deficiency. Of particular interest has been to investigate aspects related to the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to apnea. Within this line of research, individuals with experience in breath-hold diving have regularly been used as subjects. With the use of breath-hold divers as subjects came an interest in understanding the techniques these divers use to improve their performances, and the risks that may be associated with apnea diving, risks related to pulmonary edema, myocardial damage, and brain damage.
