Johanna Sörensen

PhD, Master of Science in Environmental Engineering, Associate senior lecturer

Personal profile

Research

Studies urban hydrological processes, especially during extreme rain, i.e. how torrential rain affects the stormwater network and how better stormwater management can reduce the risk of flooding. In my PhD thesis, I looked at the consequences of torrential rain in Malmö. I am particularly interested in blue-green infrastructure (NBS, SUDS, etc.) – both how well they work technically in different rains and how urban planning needs to be changed to support implementation of more solutions. For sustainable and effective climate change adaptation, more elements of blue-green solutions are required.

Teaching

I give lectures on stormwater, blue-green infrastructure, sewer systems, floods, and sustainability. For graduate students, I give one course in Advanced Hydrology and one on Sustainability. For master's students, I give a course on pipe system engineering. Usually, I supervise 2–3 master's thesis projects, often in collaboration with interested companies and water utilites.
