Research

My research focuses on a new X-ray imaging technique called X-ray multi-projection imaging (XMPI). I am working on the hardware side, contributing to its development and implementation at synchrotron and X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facilities.

One state-of-the-art imaging technique is tomography, which is based on rotating the sample and obtaining 3D (or 4D) images of the sample as a consequence. XMPI does not require rotation but instead splits the incident beam into several beams, which illuminate the sample from different directions simultaneously. This is of particular interest for sample systems that undergo changes when they are exposed to centrifugal forces, i.e., sample systems that are not compatible with being rotated. Furthermore, XMPI makes the recording of ultra-fast dynamics possible.

The ultimate goal is then to apply this technique to cellulose fibers in order to study their properties and dynamics. These recyclable biomaterials are of great interest as they are a possible replacement for plastic-based materials.
