Research

My PhD is exploring new ways of modelling and upscaling carbon fluxes from boreal peatlands. In particular, I work with drones and spectral sensors to collect high resolution surface temperature and vegetation greenness data. By combining this information with carbon flux measurements and footprint models, we will gain a greater understanding of what drives changes in the peatland carbon balance. I am also assessing how changes in vegetation temperature and other properties over space impact our ability to accurately estimate peatland carbon fluxes. As a result, this will improve our ability to partition carbon fluxes measured by eddy covariance. Ultimately, the project aims to provide information to reduce uncertainties in regional scale predictions of peatland carbon fluxes and enable more accurate predictions of how these fluxes will change in the future.

I started my PhD at the Geography Department at Swansea University (UK) and moved with my supervisor to CEC during my second year. I am part of the Lund Earth Observation Research Group at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (INES) at Lund University and the ClimbEco Research School. My project also involves close collaboration with colleagues from Gothenburg University and the Swedish Agricultural University. The main datasets for my work come from research stations that are part of the SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science) and ICOS Sweden (Integrated Carbon Observation System) networks.
