Research

My research combines satellite data with carbon flux measurements to monitor how European forests are responding to drought and wildfire.

As a postdoc, I am investigating how forest fire severity and different types of forest management are affecting the carbon balance of forests recovering from a major wildfire in central Sweden in 2018. The project uses eddy covariance data, manual chamber measurements, vegetation surveys and tower-based spectral measurements to track the growth of new vegetation and evaluate the effects of salvage-logging versus natural regeneration on the ecosystem microclimate and carbon flux emissions. The results will form the basis for policy briefs that support forest managers and policymakers in adopting sustainable post-fire forest management strategies.

I am also part of the EU Horizon project CLIMB-FOREST, investigating which satellite-derived variables are best able to capture the negative impacts of drought on the carbon fluxes of Europe's forest. This project combines long-term MODIS time series with eddy covariance measurements from over 30 forest sites around Europe. The outputs of the project will help improve our ability to model forest productivity during and after drought using satellite data, ensuring that both the immediate and longterm legacy effects of drought are accurately captured in modelled productivity.

During my PhD, I developed new methods for modelling and upscaling carbon fluxes in boreal peatlands, which focused specifically on using thermal cameras (on towers, drones and satellites) to collect high resolution surface temperature data.
