My research broadly defined focuses on global and colonial histories of diplomacy, power, and capitalism.

In my doctoral dissertation (Governing Black and White, 2023), I traced the gradual emergence of distinctly colonial ways of governing Afro-Caribbean slaves and laborers in the Danish West Indies by way of in-depth comparisons of ‘governmentalities’ in the Danish metropole and colony. This work argues the 18th and 19th centuries witnessed a profound shift in the relationship the governing of ‘black’ and ‘white’ labor. Whereas colonial governing in the 18th century still in important ways relied on a shared and commensurable repertoire of rule, during the 19th century colony and metropole evolved into ‘worlds beyond compare’, each requiring each own particular ‘handbook’ of governing.

In my two current research projects, this interest in global and colonial histories and their intersections turns to global diplomatic history and the history of Danish capitalism in Siam (Thailand).
