Research

My research area during my first period at Lund University 1972-1985 was moisture in building materials, especially moisture in concrete. I developed the method to measure RH in concrete floors and quantified drying of concrete.

My main research area during 18 years at Chalmers university of technology in Göteborg and the last eight years in Lund was ”Transport processes in porous building materials". The transport processes were moisture changes, carbonation, chloride ingress, material emissions and gas penetration. Most of this was applied to concrete but some of it concerned other materials, especially wood and wooden based materials.

The research approach was almost always a combination of laboratory studies of the processes, measuring decisive material properties, modelling of the processes based on physics and chemistry, description of the environmental actions and verification laboratory and field data. The major achievements were reached through a large number of PhD students, resulting in thirteen PhD thesis. We became world-leading in chloride ingress into concrete through continuous research for a number of years and extensive international  cooperation.
