Personal profile

Research

I am a scholar with years of dedicated study and research in economic history. Throughout my academic career, my research interests include pre-modern land institutions in China and Western Europe, the history of modern state-owned enterprises, the international monetary system, and financial crises. By asking questions from the real economy, I aim to examine the relationship between institution, capital, and the state in the process of industrialization and modernity, test the adaptability of economic and financial theories, and establish my own framework to explain the phenomenon in the changing world. I also sometimes provide policy recommendations to government based on my research.

Right now I am researching banking history and financial crisis. I am cooperating with Anders Ögren and  Seán Kenny on the project "Banking on the local level: Growth, income, and market integration.(anslagsnummer P2017-0157:1)" We have published one paper in European Review of Economic History, and there are three ongoing papers that I am working on. The first one is about the role of foreign liability in Swedish financial crises during the gold standard and the interwar periods. I explore how the risk-taking behavior was shifted by foreign liability flow before and after financial crises. The second one is about the international adjustment mechanism of Sweden during the silver and the gold standard period, coauthored with Ander Ögren. We analyze how the interaction among monetary supplies, central bank reserves and domestic prices were coping with the classical theories of the international adjustment mechanism. And the third paper is about central banking during 1930s Swedish banking crisis. I provide new evidence on the goal of Riksbank's monetary policy and explore its monetary manipulation through detailed and high-frequency balance sheet data.
