There is often considerable variation in the immune system, both between and within host species. Such variation can have important consequences for susceptibility to infection. Yet, little is known about how variation in immune defense between and within species has evolved; for example, what is the relative importance of natural selection and genetic drift? My Ph.D. project will investigate the evolutionary causes of variation in the immune system using wild rodents as a study system. The topic will be addressed at both the genetic and phenotypic (mainly transcriptomic) level.
