Main research areas

  • International cooperation
  • Legitimacy in global governance
  • Human rights and development studies
  • The UN Sustainable Development Goals

Magdalena Bexell's research revolves around how legitimacy is created, challenged or sustained in governance processes outside of the nation state. On what grounds and in whose eyes do political decisions become legitimate or questioned? How do international organizations seek legitimacy with other stakeholders than their member states? Her current research projects explore such issues particularly in the case of the Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015.
