Research

Magnus Cinthio uses diagnostic ultrasound and photoacoustics in collaboration with clinical and technical partners to explore and solve relevant clinical problems.

Together with Åsa Rydén Ahlgren, among others, Magnus Cinthio investigates longitudinal and intramural arterial wall motion— a research field they laid the foundation for 20 years ago. Their current perspective on the field is summarized in A comment on the physiological basis for longitudinal motion of the arterial wall, published in Am J Physiol - Heart Circ Physiol in 2025. At present, they are working with Artturi Petäjä to further clarify the physiology underlying longitudinal arterial wall motion and its implications for vascular disease.

Together with Isabel Goncalves and Tobias Erlöv, Magnus Cinthio is developing an ultrasound method to distinguish stable arterial plaques from those at risk of rupture—the so-called vulnerable plaques. A vulnerable plaque that ruptures and forms a blood clot is the most common cause of heart attacks and strokes.

Together with Malin Malmsjö, Magnus Cinthio has established Lund University’s photoacoustic center, where they and their partners are developing methods to enable the clinical application of this promising modality.

Together with Pernilla Stenström and collaborators, Magnus Cinthio is developing methods to characterize the colonic wall for improved diagnosis of Hirschsprung’s disease.

Together with Hideyuki Hasegawa at Toyama University in Japan, Magnus Cinthio is developing new methods to measure microcirculation.
