Magnus Jirström is Professor of Human Geography at Lund University since 2010. He teaches courses in development geography and development studies and supervises bachelor, master and doctoral theses. He is the chairman of LUMID, Lund University Master Program in International Development and Management in which he is the course convener of the course on Rural and Urban Development and Livelihoods. Magnus is a member of the Board of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Magnus’ research interests are focused on rural and agricultural development in low-income countries with a regional emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. He has done fieldwork in Malaysia, Vietnam, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe. His research work includes studies on: ●impacts of technological change in smallholder agriculture; ●income diversification among smallholders; ●agricultural policy and the role of the state in agricultural transformations; ●the role of local organizations and NGOs in rural development. Magnus is a co-founder and member of the LU-based Swedish-African research program Afrint. Currently, he leads Challenge 4 "Smallholder Agriculture within Transforming Food System" within the Sida supported program AgriFoSe2030 (Agriculture for Food Security 2030 – Translating science into policy and practice, 

Magnus currently participates in three research projects:

  • EAT ADDIS – What’s to eat? Women, Children and the urban food environment: the case of Addis Ababa. Financed by The Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning (FORMAS) (2017-2021)

  • A Bird’s-Eye View on Agricultural Transformation in sub-Saharan Africa: An analysis of living standards indicators combining panel data, satellite imagery and deep learning. Financed by The Swedish Research Council (VR) 2020-2022.

  • Mixing household surveys, satellite imagery and machine learning in human development studies: Is it (finally) time for satellite imagery in social science research? Financed by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) 2020-2023.
