Research

My primary interest regards societal change and local actors within a colonial context. Through studying meeting between different actors I investigate how relationships could be viewed as a vital mechanism for a colonial process. Through such a focus I wish to nuance current understandings of the interconnected nature of actor vs. system and the local vs. the global.

My PhD-project I specifically look at Swedish-American missionaries in Alaska during the late 19th Century, where I research what role the missionaries took within the larger colonial process. My primary focus of study is the relationships in between the missionaries, Indigenous Alaskans and other actors on the scene, and how such relations changed over time.
