Mark Milich

In my research project “Safety Culture from a Systems Perspective”, funded by the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), I explore how the aviation system, regulatory authorities, rule making, and oversight processes shape and influence safety culture and safety leadership within the aviation sector. The research investigates the conditions under which external stakeholders — such as authorities and industry organizations — can assess, evaluate, and influence the safety culture of individual organizations.

Particular attention is also given to the utility of the safety culture concept as a tool for change, as well as how leaders understand, relate to, and make sense of safety culture as a discourse.

The research is primarily conducted within the field of Work and Organizational Psychology, with elements of System Safety theory and Sociology.

Mark holds a Master’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, as well as a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Sciences. He has over 20 years of professional experience in the aviation industry as a pilot, instructor, and airline captain. He has also worked as an organizational development consultant and safety management investigator in the nuclear power sector.
