Matt Johnson is Associate Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) at Lund University.
His research is broadly comparative, with a focus on Yiddish-, German-, and English-language literature and cultural history from the 18th century to the present. He also has broad research and teaching interests in film, photography, and other media; translation theory and practice; gender studies; and the representation and memory of the Holocaust. He is currently completing a book with the working title Faltering Language: On German-Yiddish Literature, which investigates how writers variously understood and reinterpreted the relationship between German and Yiddish in the long twentieth century; he is also working on larger-scale research projects about the reception history of the 'memoirs' of Glikl bas Judah Leib and about the media history of testimony.
Matt received his Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Chicago in 2022. He subsequently taught in the Department of Germanic Languages & Literatures at the Ohio State University from 2022-24. His research has been supported by the Center for Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies at OSU, the German Literature Archive Marbach, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the Yiddish Book Center, the IFK Vienna, and the Fulbright Program, among other organizations. He is currently a member of the executive committee of the Yiddish Forum of the Modern Language Association (MLA) and one of the editors of the peer-review section of In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies. He is also currently serving as a research consultant at the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University.
