Personal profile

Research

The main aim of my research is to better understand what causes and maintains psychopathology in children and adolescents. I am currently the PI of three research projects:

1. Preventing Adversity in Children of Parents With Mental Illness: This is a longitudinal study and a long-term randomized controlled trial (RCT) with children where both biological parents suffer from mental illness. We aim to follow 500 families for 10 years and half of the families will receive long-term prevention.

2. Neural Processing of Emotion in Youth with OCD: This project aims to better understand which neural mechansisms underlie pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and how neural processing is affected by treatment. We conduct brain imaging (fMRI) before and after intensive exposure-based treatment for OCD. We study reacitvity and regulation of various emotional experiences such as anxiety, disgust, and incompleteness.

3. Ecological Momentary Assessment in Pediatric Mental Health: This project aims to improve knowledge about mental health in youth, especially in relation to symptoms of stress, anxiety and depression. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a form of measurement where participants several times each day provide in-the-moment descriptions of mood, emotions, thoughts and behaviors.

I am also involved in a large RCT where we will study which service delivery format is best for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. Two formats are contrasted: stepped care, where all participants begin with internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and stratified care, where those with the most severe and interfering anxiety symptoms are offered personalized CBT immediately.

My research is supported by grants from the Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare (Forte), Stiftelsen Lindhaga, Stiftelsen Clas Grochinskys Minnesfond, HKH Kronprinsessan Lovisas förening för barnsjukvård, Region Skåne, Fredrik och Ingrid Thurings stiftelse, Södra sjukvårdsregionen, and SUS stiftelser och donationer. I have previously been supported by grants from L.J. Boëthius stiftelse, Jerringfonden, Lions Skåne, and Bror Gadelius Minnesfond.
