Mattias research background is within mathematical modelling of soil chemistry (or, if you're mathematically inclined, differential algebraic equations systems) where he applied models and methods used in chemical engineering to forecast long term effects of pollution on forest health. For a number of years he was responsible for programming and distributing the Safe and PROFILE models and their user-interfaces, to the research community, models that were used to provide scientific support for international negotiations on emission reductions e.g. within the UN-ECE Convention on Long-Range Trans-boundary Air Pollution.


In his teaching Mattias deals with topics ranging from environmental chemistry and environmental ethics to chemical engineering issues such as mass transfer and separation processes and pedagogical issues such as learning thresholds, socialization and tacit knowledge.

From 2006 to 2012 Mattias also worked part time (up to 20%) at Genombrottet, the pedagogical development unit at the Faculty of Engineering where he was involved in giving pedagogical courses to university teachers. He has also worked with course evaluations as part of quality enhancement and quality assurance system on the faculty level as well as heading a project for promoting academic conduct among students that resulted in Lund University deciding on guidelines regarding plagiarism and deceitful plagiarism in education.

In 2018 Mattias was appointed as chairman of the internal review board on educational quality at the Faculty of Engineering. As such he leads a group of seven assessors, experienced teachers, in their work of making yearly assessments of the educational qualtiy of all undergraduate education programmes at the Facutly of Engineering, Lund University.
