My primary research interest is in understanding how historical events affect long-run development . Most of the scholarship that has examined the impact of historical events on development in Sub-Saharan Africa has invoked the differences in institutions based on the broader colonial power identities, i.e., French and British Africa. However, this kind of analysis does not capture the influence and effect of other colonial actors, such as the privately-owned companies in the colonies and the various missionaries on post-colonial development divergencies. Fundamentally, my research focuses on understanding how the presence of other colonial actors influenced Africa’s long-run development. To achieve this, firstly, I build historical databases to understand the synchronic impacts of the various actors on historical development in Africa. Secondly, to understand the impact of these colonial actors on long-run development, I amalgamate historical data with various contemporary micro-level data sets.
In my recent work, I analyzed the long-term impacts of Christian missionary exposure on education and health in Zambia.
