Research

Associate Professor Mika Hietanen is a rhetorician, argumentation scholar, exegete, and pedagogue with a focus on both authentic and literary argumentation in different contexts; political and religious as well as educational. His interests include a variety of both classical and modern rhetorical methods and historical and contemporary persuasive and argumentative techniques. Hietanen has published both research and textbook chapters, popularisations, and research journal articles in, among others, Argumentation, Rhetorica Scandinavica, Teologisk tidskrift, Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, Finsk tidskrift, and Journal of Communication Inquiry.

Prof. Hietanen is currently engaged in research on argument literacy, rhetorical argumentation, hate speech, and argument and democracy. He has been a researcher at the Centre of Excellence ”Formation of Early Jewish and Christian Ideology”, Academy of Finland, and The International Learned Institute of Argumentation Studies (ILIAS), The Netherlands.

Prof. Hietanen has five academic degrees and has studied or worked at Åbo Akademi University (Finland, 1918), Misjonshøgskolen (Norway, 1843), University of Helsinki (Finland, 1640, #115 QS), University of Münster (Germany, 1780), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands, 1632, #53 QS), Uppsala University (Sweden, 1477, #105 QS), and Lund University (Sweden, 1666, #85 QS).
