My research focuses on infectious complications associated with central venous catheters.
Central venous catheters (CVCs) are essential when caring for the critically ill. However, they are associated with an increased risk of infections. In the last decade, several routine improvements in CVC insertions and management have been implemented worldwide, with the aim to reduce CVC-related complications such as catheter-related infections (CRIs). One study even showed that they can be eliminated. However, an infection burden still remains - especially in high-risk patients such as hematology patients. Therefore, it is important to further study these infections to find factors we can impact and to be able to direct our resources further with the goal to reduce - and hopefully eliminate - CRI.
