Personal profile

Research

My research focus on economic history of colonial and post-colonial Africa. In particular I am interested in measurement of growth and living standards in the 20th century. I am working on a book manuscript to be published by Cambridge University Press in 2019 with the title The Wealth and Poverty of African States. Economic growth, living standards and taxation in African states since the late 19th Century.

I am also working with Ellen Hillbom and Jutta Bolt on the project «Growing more unequal? Long term trends in inequality in Africa».

Outreach

I am a columnist in the norwegian daily Klassekampen, and frequently contribute by giving interviews and writing op eds in international media. I am regurarly invited to give keynote lectures at public events and scientific conferences.

I am also the co-founder (together with Erik Green ) of the African Economic History Network. See more on: www.aehnetwork.org
