Research

Nils-Eric Sahlin is former Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Lund University, and Professor of Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University.

Sahlin received his doctorate in 1984 with a thesis entitled Secondary Levels in Decision Making. His research focuses on issues relating to rational and human decision-making under uncertainty. However, he has also written books and essays in several of the main areas of philosophy and medical ethics, and has worked in areas related to law and cognitive psychology.

Sahlin has, among other things, taken an interest in the philosophy of the British philosopher Frank Plumpton Ramsey. In addition to the monograph The Philosophy of F.P. Ramsey (Cambridge 1990) and several essays on the subject, he has also published a couple of Ramsey's posthumous works.

For six years, Sahlin was Head of the international research programme Science and Proven Experience, a programme funded by the Riksbankens Jubileumsfond.

Sahlin is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry, and Academia Europaea.

For almost two decades, Sahlin was an expert member of The Swedish National Council on Medical Ethics, and he has been chair of the Swedish Research Council's expert group on ethics and a member of ALLEA (the European Science and Technology Academies' Service Organisation).

Sahlin is vice-chair of the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE), a group appointed by the President of the European Commission.
