Patrik Olsson’s research and teaching focus on aspects surrounding the rule of law within distinctive contexts by using socio-legal theory and methodological tools to understand the research areas in question.

His ongoing research is particularly focused on the one hand, concerning the complex area of corruption and on the other hand: comparative studies on social control and rural crime in contexts of Scandinavia, Latin America and Central Asia.

Another research and teaching area is related to the socio-legal conditions of poverty-stricken young people in slums and favelas where everyday life is characterized by conflicts between criminal gangs, trafficking of drugs and arms, interventions by the police, and aspects of discrimination and violence as well as social exclusion.
