My research centers on digitalization—more precisely, on information and communication technologies (ICT) as both enablers of organizational success and catalysts of accelerated failure. Across my work, I examine how ICT reshapes industries, institutions, and societal structures, and how organizations navigate the opportunities and risks embedded in this transformation.
A significant part of this inquiry has focused on Smart Cities, where ICT functions not merely as infrastructure but as an organizing logic that shapes sustainability, governance, and stakeholder configurations. Building on my earlier work conceptualizing Smart Cities as organizational fields, I continue to explore how digital technologies enable or constrain sustainability-oriented practices and how municipalities can avoid the pitfalls of adopting technology without strategic alignment.
In parallel, I have investigated digitalization within healthcare, particularly through the implementation and use of electronic medical records (EMRs). This work highlights how EMRs serve as both a cornerstone for operational excellence and a source of unintended organizational challenges. These insights extend to broader questions of how digital tools mediate professional work, decision-making, and institutional accountability.
My interest in ICT originally emerged from my dissertation on alliances within the physical security industry, where I examined how organizations collaborate to harness emerging technologies. This foundation has evolved into a broader research agenda that spans entrepreneurial ecosystems, sustainability transitions, and the digital transformation of traditional industries—from Italian viticulture and wineries to nonprofit accountability and online communities.
Across these domains, my publications consistently point to a central conclusion: understanding how we use ICT is as critical as the technologies themselves. Digitalization is not a neutral force; it reshapes competencies, expectations, and power structures. Whether examining sustainability “greenwashing” in IS/IT job ads, the alignment between IS curricula and employer needs, or the evolution of discourse in online anti-vaccination communities, my work shows that digital transformation affects both private citizens and organizations in profound ways.
As society moves deeper into the next wave of modernization, the stakes are clear. Without a nuanced understanding of digitalization—its drivers, barriers, and socio‑technical implications—neither corporations nor municipalities will be equipped to thrive in the coming decades. My research aims to illuminate these dynamics and contribute frameworks that support not just sustainability, but thrivability, in an increasingly digital world.
