Teaching

Teaching philosophy

My underlying view is that knowledge and understanding are based on experience and not objective and independent from the learner’s environment. From a teaching perspective, this implies that the learning is focused towards integrating knowledge to already existing understanding and perceptions. Thus, my role as a teacher is to facilitate the sense making and not focus on how students can best memorize concepts and theories based on earlier knowledge. Instead, existing concepts and theories should be connected to student’s prior understanding by encouraging debate and critical thinking. I do this by using mixed methods such as case studies, breakout groups, simulations and regular lections. I am also trying to mix electronic online lectures, and videos. To achieve deep learning I try to give both formative as well as peer feedback and use concepts and theories in different settings.
