My research projects are based in Sweden and in Ethiopia. The research activities are focused on understanding infectious diseases in the context of interactions between pathogen, host and society. I am head of a field research station in Adama, Ethiopia. The research network involves collaboration with different experts at Lund university as well as Ethiopian organizations and research institutes.

At the Adama research station we conduct cohort studies that aim to investigate aspects of tuberculosis (TB) in HIV-positive individuals, as well as in women of reproductive age and their infants. A principal objective is to construct methods for diagnosis and management that are adapted for use in high-burden low-income settings. Specifically, we wish to construct alternative methods for detecting TB co-infection, by using clinical algorithms in combination with biomarkers. Linked to these objectives are laboratory studies on how components of the immune system determine the outcome and characteristics of TB infection.
