Research

The ecosystem–atmosphere flux of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) has important impacts on tropospheric oxidative capacity and the formation of secondary organic aerosols, influencing air quality and climate.

My PhD research focuses on BVOC fluxes from boreal forests, principally at the ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System) station Norunda in Sweden, with an emphasis on using proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (PTR-ToF-MS) measurements and adsorbent tube sampling for ATD-GC-MS analysis.

Research activities in recent years at INES:

  • Investigating the vertical distribution of BVOC sources and sinks within boreal forest canopies, using inverse Lagrangian transport methods with long-term (2014-2016) observations of BVOC concentration and sonic-anemometer vertical profiles within boreal forest canopy
  • Long-term (2020 – 2023) monitoring of BVOC fluxes above boreal forests using high-frequency (10Hz) Vocus PTR-ToF-MS measurement campaigns for eddy-covariance (EC) flux analysis, as well as compound-speciated BVOC concentration monitoring using thermal desorption (TD) BVOC sampling via offline ATD-GC-MS analysis
  • Investigating compound-speciated BVOC fluxes above boreal forest canopy using gradient-flux relationship approaches, performed using TD sampling of the BVOC concentration gradient (from 37 to 60 m) above forest canopy in conjunction with PTR-ToF-MS EC flux measurements
  • 2022 clearcut campaign during the clearcut of the Norunda forest, investigating the impact of clearcutting disturbances and clearcut residues on short-term (ca. hours to days) and persistent long-term (ca. weeks to months) BVOC emissions
