Research

I’m a Guest Professor at the Department of Health Sciences at Lund University and Professor of Sociology at the University of Iceland. I’m currently also the chairman of the State University Professors’ Union in Iceland. I received my PhD in medical sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1993.

I have published numerous scientific articles in national and international journals in the areas of adolescent health-related behavior and well-being, social support and adult mental health, and organization of health services and access to health care. I have directed three large national panel health surveys among Icelandic adults focusing on physical and mental health, health-related behavior, life-stress, and social support. I participated in the development of the Icelandic Health Behavior in School-Aged Children (HBSC) surveys.
