Our main research project is Good Aging in Skåne (GÅS) - a national longitudinal population study that will provide knowledge about what affects older people's health and health care. Key research areas include intellectual (cognitive) function in the elderly, especially atherosclerosis (vascular risk factors), diet, causes of falls and fractures, and population-based studies of older people's health, functional capacity and health care utilization.

Geriatrics takes into account the interaction between medical, psychological and social factors that affect morbidity and the options available to prevent morbidity. There is a need for increased knowledge in aging research to better understand and provide rehabilitation. But also to see how the disability affects the living conditions and the needs of the service and care available. This is important knowledge because the oldest is increasing rapidly in number.

The department is located at the Clinical Research Centre at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö. Operations are conducted in close collaboration with Geriatrics, Skåne University Hospital. Approximately 35 people are linked to the department which 7 postdoc / doc as well as 13 doctoral students.

We work with a number of epidemiological cohort studies such as Good Aging in Skåne (GÅS-SNAC) part of the Swedish National study on Aging and Care (SNAC), the population cohort EpiHealth, ‘Men born 1914’ and the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MKC) study.
