Personal profile

Research

Sofia graduated in the summer of 2018 as an environmental engineer with a special focus on water resources management. In her master thesis she explored the possibility of combining biological treatment (MBBR) with adsorptive treatment (PAC) to remove organic micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals from municipal wastewater. She became a PhD student in September 2018 at the Department of Chemical Engineering. Her research topic is enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) and phosphorus recovery through struvite precipitation.

Sofia’s work is a part of the EU-financed project LIWE LIFE in which a brand-new wastewater treatment plant will be built in Lidköping municipality, Sweden. This treatment plant will contain techniques such as EBPR, side stream hydrolysis, struvite precipitation, ozonation for pharmaceutical reduction and disc filters for removal of particles and micro plastics. LCA-studies will also be a part of the work.

Sofia’s work as a PhD will mainly be financed by Lidköping municipality but she is also partly supported by Svenskt Vatten through their programme VA-teknik Södra.

Associate Professor Karin Jönsson (LTH) is Sofia's main supervisor and Professor Magdalena Svanström (Chalmers) is her assistant supervisor.
