Research

My research includes studies on the impact of the indoor physical environment on humans. In a modern society we spend a great deal of our waking time indoors and at latitudes far from the Equator we need to depend on artificial lighting for much of the year. How we experience and are affected by light and colour are questions that we are looking at in both laboratory and field settings. The non-visual effects of light and colour are of special interest, i.e. the impact of light and colour on well-being and emotions. Our well-being has an impact on our behaviour and performance and it is interesting to study different types of work environment, such as offices or schools.

On a more basic level we try to understand why we prefer certain environments rather than others. By investigating patterns in the visual environment based on fractal dimensions, different environments can be compared systematically. This research is conducted in close collaboration with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences at Alnarp since one interesting question is to compare artificial and natural environments.

I also teach on various educational programmes and courses in the field of environmental psychology, but also in the subjects of light and colour. Supervision of doctoral students is another of my tasks. I am also director of a national research centre for energy-efficient lighting, CEEBEL, aimed at initiating, co-ordinating, and spreading research on light and lighting in Sweden.

I am also project manager for the international conference on human-environment studies (IAPS 24).
