Research

My research interests are in the fields of critical animal studies and critical media studies. Within these fields I have been exploring issues relating to veganism and animals as food, and how animals are made accessible for human consumption. Since 2012 I have been concerned in particular with the dairy industry, and how animals figure as discursive beings in the dairy industry’s communication in different context (social media, promotional events etc.). More recently I have also come to focus on food activism in social media settings, in particular in relation to animal rights and dairy and nondairy-alternatives. A related research track that I have been engaged in concerns media and climate change, and how climate change is constructed in news media and in popular culture.

I am the co-founder of the Lund University Critical Animal Studies Network (LUCASN). The aim of the network is to act as a platform and an interdisciplinary hub at Lund University for scholars and students interested in Critical Animal Studies.

LUCASN work with education, networking and by promoting collaborative research projects. Since 2012 we give the award winning and highly sought after course Critical Animal Studies: Animals in Society, Culture and the Media. We host a seminar series, research conferences and are actively engaged in workshop and outreach activities both within and outside the academic community. LUCASN is also part of an extensive network of national and international centers for research and education in the fields of human-animal studies and critical animal studies and co-sponsors the open-access journal Politics and Animals.
