Research

In my research, I endeavour to analyse pieces of music as semantic and performative acts in historical contexts. Intermediality, intertextuality, and hermeneutics are fundamental concepts for my study of the relationships of the music with poetry, novels, visual art, politics, religion, philosophy, and movements such as the youth movement and the temperance movement.

At present, I am writing a monography about the music of the Swedish composer Hugo Alfvén (1872–1960) in relation to social reform movements and Lebensphilosophie at the turn of the twentieth century.

In my doctoral dissertation (2009), I brought new insight into a group of songs by Franz Schubert by reconnecting them to early-nineteenth-century trends in recitation and garden planning, and, thence, to some of the aesthetical and political conflicts of the time. The dissertation was awarded the Carl-Allan Moberg prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Musicand the Swedish Society for Musicology.
